Which Gutter Guard Is Right for You?
Guards keep leaves and needles out, so you can stop climbing ladders to clean your gutters. Here’s how the three main types compare.
The Three Types of Gutter Guards
| Type | Stops | Best for | Systems we install |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perforated metal guard | Leaves | Homes with mostly leafy trees | Alu-Rex |
| Fine mesh guard | Leaves, pine needles and seeds | Homes near pine trees | Valor, Alu-Rex Double Pro |
| Reverse curve hood | Leaves slide right off while water flows in | Heavy leaf fall and pine areas | Gutter Topper |
If you have lots of pine trees, the fine mesh or hood styles work best.

Living near pine trees? Here is what that means for your gutters and guards.
Alu-Rex continuous hangers
Alu-Rex systems pair a guard with a continuous hanger that supports the gutter along its full length, so it won’t sag, warp or pull away under snow and ice.
- Double Pro: built-in microfiltration guard. Holds up to 425 lb per linear foot and drains up to 40″ of rain per hour. Fits 5″ and 6″ gutters. 360° Lifetime Warranty*.
- T-Rex: holds up to 250 lb per linear foot and drains up to 30″ per hour. Best for light debris. Lifetime sturdiness and manufacturing warranty, plus a 25-year prorated clog-free warranty*.
*Manufacturer warranties as stated by Alu-Rex. All warranties are subject to Udderly Gutters approval.
Will guards work on my gutters?
- Aluminum or other metal gutters (most homes): yes.
- Copper gutters: yes, with guards made to match.
- Plastic (PVC) or wood gutters: we don’t put guards on these. We can replace them with new seamless metal gutters and add guards at the same time.
How to choose
- Lots of pine trees? Fine mesh (Valor or Alu-Rex Double Pro) or a reverse curve hood (Gutter Topper).
- Mostly leaves? A perforated metal guard does the job.
- Heavy snow and ice? An Alu-Rex continuous hanger keeps gutters from sagging.
- Not sure? We’ll look at your trees, roof and gutters during your free estimate and recommend the right guard.
