Signs Your Gutters Need Attention

Water spilling over the edge, sagging, leaks at seams, stained siding, soft fascia and pooling near your foundation are the most common signs your gutters need cleaning, repair or replacement.

What Are the Warning Signs of Gutter Problems?

Most gutter problems show up as water in the wrong place. Walk around your home during or after a rain and look for these signs:

  1. Water spilling over the edge. If water pours over the front of your gutters in rain, they may be clogged, pitched wrong or too small for your roof.
  2. Sagging or pulling away. Gutters that dip or lean away from the house usually have loose or failing hangers, or rotted fascia behind them.
  3. Leaks and drips at seams and corners. Drips from joints and corners mean seals have failed. Seamless gutters have far fewer joints to leak.
  4. Peeling paint or stains on siding. Streaks, stains or peeling paint below the gutters mean water is running down the house instead of through the gutters.
  5. Soft or rotted fascia. The board behind your gutters can rot when water gets behind them. If it feels soft, it needs attention before new gutters go up.
  6. Erosion or pooling near the foundation. Washed-out mulch, trenches in the soil or puddles along the house point to downspouts that need extensions or better placement.
  7. Ice buildup and big icicles. Heavy ice along the gutters in winter can signal clogs, poor drainage or ice dams forming on the roof.
  8. Plants or debris growing in the gutters. If you can see leaves, seedlings or moss from the ground, your gutters are overdue for a cleaning.

Gutter Warning Signs FAQ

How do I know if my gutters need to be replaced?

Gutters that sag, leak in several spots, pull away from the house or have rotted fascia behind them may need replacing. A few small issues can often be repaired.

Why is water coming over the top of my gutters?

Usually clogs, the wrong pitch, or gutters too small for your roof. Start with a cleaning; if they still overflow, have them checked.

Are peeling paint and stains a gutter problem?

Often, yes. They usually mean water is running down your siding instead of through the gutters.

Can bad gutters cause basement water?

Yes. Overflowing gutters and short downspouts drop water right along your foundation.
