How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

Most homes need gutter cleaning twice a year, in spring and fall. Homes with few trees can go once a year, and homes under heavy pines may need it up to four times a year.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

It depends on the trees around your home:

  • Few or no trees nearby: once a year.
  • Most homes: twice a year, in spring and fall, to catch blossoms, seeds and fall leaves.
  • Heavy pines or lots of trees: up to four times a year, from March through November.

Pine needles are small and keep dropping through the year, so homes under pines clog faster than you might expect.

Living near pine trees? Here is what that means for your gutters and guards.

When Is the Best Time to Clean Gutters?

Late fall, after the leaves drop, is the most important cleaning of the year in New England. It clears your gutters before snow and ice arrive. A spring cleaning catches blossoms and seeds. We clean gutters any time the temperatures allow; below freezing, we work around the weather.

Signs you’re overdue: water spilling over the edge, plants growing in the gutters, or stains on your siding. See Signs Your Gutters Need Attention and DIY vs. Hiring a Pro.
